April 13, 2007
It was announced today that Paul Lowden will coach the ACHA Division II Select Team on their inaugural European Tour, tentatively scheduled for December 27, 2007-January 4, 2008.  Lowden’s playing and coaching experience contributed to his selection.  In reaction to the announcement, Lowden stated, “It is an honor to be selected as head coach of the ACHA DII Select Team. I thank Mike Radakovich and Paul Hebert for this great opportunity.” Growing up in Scarborough, Ontario Canada, Lowden played youth hockey through Juniors in Toronto. Recruited by Ferris State University, he played NCAA Division I hockey for four years. He was selected to the Ferris State University Hall of Fame in 2003 and currently holds the record for total points and goals scored in a career at Ferris State.

Following graduation in 1987, Lowden played professional hockey in Germany for six years.  Lowden’s coaching career started with youth hockey and high school. He accepted a position as Athletic Director for Davenport University  and put in charge of building an athletic program.  Davenport’s ACHA DII hockey program was the first athletic program in 2002-2003. Davenport University will sponsor 16 athletic programs in 2007-2008.

Lowden believes the ACHA will have a successful showing.  “In my 5 years as head coach of Davenport University I have noticed the depth of talent in the ACHA continuing to improve every year.”  In comparing this team to others on the tour, Lowden stated, “Without prior knowledge of our competition, I expect our team to be well suited for playing on Olympic size rinks in Europe. We should have a lot of speed and be very creative offensively. It is a great opportunity for these players to showcase their talents. We will represent the ACHA very well.”

Lowden will be coaching a team consisting of some players he has coached against.  “I have enjoyed coaching against some of the best players in the ACHA. I look forward to this opportunity having them on my bench this time. It will be a rewarding experience,” affirms Lowden.  Addressing the challenge of coaching a team that will have very little preparation time together, Lowden states, “I along with my coaching staff will be in communication with all of the selected players. We will try to get to know each player before we meet for our first practice. This will help with line combinations and defensive pairings. Being on the road is the best way to build chemistry. I think these guys will bond very well within a few days.”

Paul Lowden currently lives in Ada, Michigan just outside Grand Rapids. He has been married for almost 19 years to his wife Lisa and has three children. Daughters Kristyn 15, Kaitlyn 14, and  their son Kyler 4 ½.
